PH ADOPTS FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK AS FUEL PRICES SET TO RISE
The Philippine government will switch to a four-day week in all government offices starting March 10, 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Monday March 2026. After global conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States caused oil prices to surge and threaten supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
Philippines is preparing for higher fuel prices at tensions in the Middle East disrupt global oil supply. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said government offices will shift to a four-day work week to help reduce fuel consumption and ease the economic pressure on workers.
Government officials said fuel prices may increase next week. Gasoline could rise by 7.48 pesos per liter, diesel by 17.28 pesos per liter, and kerosene by 32.35 peso per liter. These increases may happen if oil shipments are disrupted in Strait of Hormuz a major route where about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes.
The conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has heightened concerns about global energy security. Economists caution that rising gasoline costs may also result in greater costs for food, transportation, and other necessities. Many Filipinos may be impacted by this, particularly those who commute daily to work.
This case demonstrates how individuals in the Philippines might be impacted by events occurring in other regions of the world. Despite being far distant, the conflict still has an impact on daily living and the nation’s economy.
MORE THAN 100 CHILDREN REPORTED KILLED AFTER STRIKE HITS SCHOOL IN SOUTHERN IRAN
More than people and most of them children were reported killed and injuring around 95 others on Sunday on March 2026, when air strikes hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh girl’s elementary school in Minab, Southern Iran. Iranian authorities said the attack occurred during school hours, causing severe damage to the building and injuring dozens more. Officials blamed the strikes on United States and Israel, saying the military action targeted civilian infrastructure, while the U.S. and Israel had not yet responded. Rescue teams worked to find survivors amid the rubble, highlighting the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
Officials in Iran said students and teachers were inside the school when the strike happened. Rescue workers searched through the rubble while emergency teams tried to find survivors.
Investigations by the U. S. military suggest that the missile was likely carried nout by U.S. forces. The president of the United State Donald Trump has suggested alternative explanation, claiming others might be responsible.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations called the strike a serious violation of international law and accused the United States and Israel of targeting civilians. At the time of reporting, the U.S. and Israel had not responded directly to these claims. The reported strike comes amid a broader wave of military exchanges between the countries, raising fears of further civilian.
Human rights observers have repeatedly warned that attacks impacting schools not only cause immediate loss of life but also disrupt access to education for surviving children. In areas already experiencing instability, the long-term consequences can include displacement, psychological trauma, and halted schooling.
With education systems increasingly affected by violence, the reported attack serves as a stark reminder of how war extends beyond battlefields, impacting classrooms, families, and the next generation.

RISING FUEL PRICES, RISING BURDEN
In the Philippines, every increase in fuel prices sends a ripple effect through the daily lives of millions of people. What may appear as a simple change in numbers at fuel stations quickly becomes a heavy burden for ordinary Filipinos. From jeepney drivers and delivery riders to commuters and small business owners, rising gas prices affect more than transportation, they influence how people manage their everyday lives.
Fuel remains essential to transportation and economic activity. When fuel prices increase, transportation fares often follow. For workers who rely on daily commuting and families who depend on public transport, even a small fare increase can significantly affect their daily expenses. A few extra pesos may seem minor, but over time these increases accumulate and strain already limited household budgets.
The effects extend beyond transportation. Rising fuel prices also influence the cost of goods and services. Trucks that transport vegetables, rice, and other basic necessities rely heavily on fuel to operate. When fuel becomes more expensive, the cost of transporting goods also increases. As a result, market prices rise, leaving consumers paying more for the same essential products.
For many Filipino families, this situation becomes increasingly difficult. Salaries often remain unchanged while the prices of goods and services continue to climb. Families are forced to stretch their budgets, sometimes sacrificing certain needs just to keep up with daily expenses. In this way, the impact of rising fuel prices reaches far beyond the fuel pump and into households across the country.
Transport workers are among those who feel the pressure most strongly. Jeepney drivers and other public transport operators depend on daily earnings to support their families. When fuel prices rise, a large portion of their income goes directly to fuel costs. Although fare increases may offer temporary relief, they can also reduce the number of passengers who can afford to travel, creating another challenge for transport workers.
However, this issue is not limited to the Philippines. Across the world, many countries experience similar struggles when global oil prices rise. Nations that rely heavily on imported fuel often face higher transportation costs, increased prices of goods, and economic pressure on households. This situation demonstrates how interconnected the global economy has become, where changes in energy markets affect communities in many different parts of the world.
Governments often attempt to reduce the burden through subsidies and assistance programs, particularly for transport workers and vulnerable sectors. While these efforts can provide temporary relief, many experts believe that long-term strategies are necessary. Improving public transportation systems, investing in renewable energy, and reducing dependence on imported oil may help countries become more resilient against global fuel price fluctuations.
Transparency and accountability are also important factors. Citizens deserve clear explanations about why fuel prices continue to rise and how government policies influence these changes. When people understand the situation better, it becomes easier to build trust between governments and the public.
The issue of rising fuel prices also highlights the growing need for sustainable solutions worldwide. Renewable energy sources, more efficient transportation systems, and investments in sustainable infrastructure may help reduce dependence on expensive fossil fuels in the future.
Rising gas prices are not merely an economic concern, they are a social issue that affects daily life in many countries. From transportation to food prices, the consequences are felt in homes, communities, and local economies. Addressing this challenge requires cooperation among governments, industries, and citizens around the world. Through thoughtful planning and long-term solutions, societies can work toward a future where energy and transportation remain accessible and affordable for everyone.
WHEN WAR REACHES OUR HOME
Every time I open my phone and see news about missile strikes and rising global tension, I cannot help but think about one group of Filipinos, our Overseas Filipino Workers. For many people, war may seem like something happening far away. But for families with loved ones working abroad, those headlines feel much closer to home.
I often imagine what it must feel like to work in another country while hearing news about conflict nearby. Many OFWs are nurses, construction workers, household helpers, and technicians in different parts of the world, especially in the Middle East. When tensions rise, their daily lives can suddenly become uncertain. Airports may close, transportation becomes limited, and evacuation plans may start. Meanwhile, families in the Philippines wait anxiously for messages confirming that their loved ones are safe.
What worries me even more is how conflict can affect the livelihood of OFWs. I know that many Filipino families depend on the money sent home from abroad. Remittances pay for food, school expenses, and daily needs. If war disrupts businesses or forces workers to leave their jobs, the impact is not only felt overseas, it is also felt inside Filipino homes.
I also notice how quickly information spreads online during times of conflict. Sometimes the news is accurate, but other times it is not. I have seen edited videos and alarming posts that create panic, especially for families with relatives working abroad. Because of this, I believe we must be careful about what we share and make sure the information we spread is true.
When I think about OFWs, I am reminded of how much sacrifice they make. They leave their homes, their families, and sometimes even miss important moments just to provide a better future for the people they love. During times of global tension, their courage becomes even more evident.
In times of conflict, information spreads very quickly online. Social media platforms are often filled with videos, photos, and updates about what is happening in different parts of the world. While some of this information is accurate and helpful, other posts can be misleading or completely false. Edited videos, recycled footage, and exaggerated reports can create unnecessary panic, especially for families whose relatives are in affected regions.
War may happen in distant places, but for me, it is never truly distant when Filipinos are involved. As a nation, I believe we must continue to value, support, and protect our OFW especially when the world becomes uncertain. Because behind every headline about conflict, there may be a Filipino simply trying to work, survive, and return home safely.

Mang Ariel continues walking through different streets in the community, pushing his cart under the heat of the sun while offering his ice cream to anyone who might want to buy. When asked what advice he would give to the youth, Mang Ariel shared a simple yet powerful message: “Work hard and focus on your studies” Through his daily journey under the sun, Mang Ariel proves that resilience is not always found in grand achievements. Sometimes, it can be seen in the steady footsteps of a father who sell an ice cream cart working tirelessly, one day at a time, for the dreams of his children.
WHEN MISSILES FELL, SHE STAYED
Today, the world is facing many problems. Wars, conflicts, and disasters are happening in different parts of the globe. Because of this global crisis, many innocent people are affected. Families are forced to leave their homes, and workers far from their countries face great danger. Yet even in these difficult times, stories of courage and kindness continue to appear.
One of these stories is about a Filipina caregiver named Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera.
Mary Ann was 32 years old and came from Pangasinan in the Philippines. Like many overseas Filipino workers, she chose to work abroad to support her family. She worked in Israel as a caregiver, taking care of an elderly patient who depended on her every day.
At first, her job may seem simple, but it was very important. She helped her patient eat, move, and do daily activities. She also gave comfort and companionship. For Mary Ann, caring for her patient was not only work, it was also a responsibility and an act of compassion.
However, life in Israel suddenly became more dangerous when conflict in the Middle East grew worse. Missile attacks and air-raid sirens became part of daily life. Whenever sirens sounded, people had to quickly run to bomb shelters to stay safe.
Meanwhile, many foreign workers, including Filipinos, continued doing their jobs despite the fear around them. One day, during a missile attack in Tel Aviv, sirens rang loudly across the city. People rushed to find safety. In that frightening moment, Mary Ann did not think only about herself. Instead, she helped her elderly patient move toward a shelter.
During the attack, Mary Ann was hit by shrapnel while helping her patient reach safety. She was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Sadly, she later died from her injuries. Her patient survived the attack. Her death saddened many Filipinos around the world. Government officials and Filipino communities expressed sympathy to her family. At the same time, many people praised her courage and dedication.
Although Mary Ann was not a soldier, her actions showed true bravery. She chose to protect the person she cared for even in the middle of danger. Her story also reflects the strength of many overseas Filipino workers. Around the world, millions of Filipinos work far from home. They face homesickness, challenges, and sometimes even dangerous situations. Still, they continue to work hard for their families.
Because of this, Filipinos are often known for their resilience. Pinoy resilience means staying strong, hopeful, and compassionate even during difficult times. Mary Ann’s story clearly shows this strength. Even while the world faced conflict and crisis, she continued to do her duty with care and courage. In the end, her bravery became a symbol of Pinoy resilience amid global flames.
Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera may have been an ordinary worker, but her actions were extraordinary. She showed that courage does not always come from soldiers or leaders. Sometimes, it comes from simple people who choose to care for others.
When missiles fell, she stayed.
And through her sacrifice, she reminded the world that even in the middle of a global crisis, humanity and kindness can still shine.
